Dreaming About Doors?

Posted on Monday, December 28, 2009 in General

Is a door a big obstacle in your dreams, something you bang against or cant get through, or is it the open door opportunity making your dreams occasionally sweet? Do you believe dreams have meaning? Well, for a bit of change on my blog I copied some internet sites´wisdom on doors in dreams. Believe it or not! (I dont, but that´s ok :-)

“Door Dream Meaning

Psychological Meaning: If a door opens outward, it may show that you have a need to be more accessible to others. However, an inward opening door may represent your desire for inner exploration and self-discovery. A door may also represent a new opening in your waking life or a desire to open up your feelings. If the door is locked, you may feel that opportunities are being denied you or alternatively it can represent ‘closing the door to the past’.

Mystical Meaning: There are lot’s of dream oracles for this one: a door knob means unexpected good luck, hinges bring family problems, locked doors show missed opportunities, an open door predicts good fortune, a revolving door means a monotonous period ahead and a trap door predicts shocking news. ”  From http://www.dreamsleep.net/meaning-of-door-dream.html

Doris Duke Doors

Posted on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in Art, General

Hey, door darlings, I just saw the movie “Bernard and Doris” on HBO about the life of American tobacco heiress Doris Duke (1912-1993) and when I googled her, because I didnt know a darn thing about her, I found out she was a door darling too. When she married in 1935, she went around the world for her honeymoon and started buying incredible things in every country. She picked up some amazing doors, too, and later had them brought to her Hawaiian home called “Shangri La” where she recreated rooms in Turkish, Morrocan, Indian or Persian style. My, what fun a few million dollars lets you have…..

http://www.shangrilahawaii.org/template_single.asp?style=browse&currentrecord=1&page=search&profile=objects&searchdesc=Collection%20is%20WEBDoors&searchstring=Collection/,/is/,/WEBDoors/,/false&pageId=6&newvalues=1&newstyle=single&newpage=single&newcurrentrecord=12

Sure would be lovely to have this sliding door out of marble, wouldnt it, perhaps between your bath and built-in closet or walk-in wardrobe, or leading toward the veranda?

Well, no matter how poor or rich we are, we all must walk through a lot of doors, and good old Doris, well, with her pocket book, doors just opened automatically. I wonder if that became boring for her with time. Dont forget to create you homes in your own style, so how about painting a fake door(trompe l´Oeil style) here and there, if you cant afford the one Doris got. It´s definately something I always wanted to do. I already tried it with some stencil on the terrace walls.

This is one was seen on http://www.trompe-l-oeil-art.com/trompe.html

Door Details

Posted on Sunday, August 2, 2009 in General

Sunday comes around sooner than expected, darlings, doesnt it? And on Sunday why not dwell, for a second or two, on the big question: who is more powerful god or the devil?  In German, there are 2 contradictory sayings about details:

“Der liebe Gott steckt im Detail” (Lit: dear God is in the detail)

“Der Teufel steckt im Detail” (Lit.: the devil is in the detail)

The first referring to the love , care and attention we put into each and every detail of a project or an art work. While the second one assumes  if we spend too much time worrying about detail, we miss the big picture, and tending to every little (unimportant) matter could spoil the whole project . What do you think: devil or god ?  Good riddens, but what has all this got to do with bloody doors, you are asking yourself . Well, these here door details are the link, and is what I am getting at. I think it is nice to notice details, but only the door artisans can answer the god or devil question, I suppose. At least we can enjoy their work here regardless of the answer.

More on door protection

Posted on Saturday, July 25, 2009 in Berlin, General

May be you renters dont care much about safety, but once you own that shop and that door, boy, you make sure you protect it (and what´s inside), am I right, or am I right? The solution, darlings: SHUTTERS! Of course! And as you all know me by now, please, dont be boring, bring even your shutters to life, you know you can!

Doors of Heaven and Hell

Posted on Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Art, General

Hello, Darlings! You have probably been wondering all this while, why I am not giving you the whole spiel about the history of doors. Well, first of all, I know that you hate to read too much and in any case, other people have written about it already so nicely, so google it, if you please. But there is, for example, a good site by a UK door maker who (more…)

Doors, Goats and Probability

Remember this from school, my darlings? Trying to figure out what your chances are of winning a car that was hiding behind one of three doors?

No, well try it again and see if your brain still works.

And you can read Drexel University´s explanation about the Monty Hall problem (named after the famous game show)  which was first dwelled on by good old Pascal ( French mathematician who lived only 400 years ago)

Darlings, we are not alone.  All over the world people are loving doors!  Surely you have heard of the photo site www.flickr.com . Of course!  So I too checked for doors and – oh me gosh- I found more than 20 groups who are into doors and gates, portals etc and there are

200.000 photos of doors by 27.000 door loving darlings, who I hope will one fine day stumble across my site

You can find pictures there for red doors, green doors, Dublin doors, doors in decay (see my post “Shabby and Very Delightful!” ), doors to nowhere, doors and windows, big doors, door art, doors within doors, and more and more and more.

Start searching, clicking, gawking and let your door heart jump with joy, but dont go astray for too long and come back here!

On the lighter side

How about a joke for a change?

Yo’ mama is so fat you have to grease the door frame and hold a twinkie on the other side just to get her through.

(seen on www.freeware2000.com/jokes )

No good?  What about this one?

A person checks into a hotel for the first time in his life, and goes up to his room. Five minutes later he calls the desk and say, “You’ve given me a room with no exit. How do I leave?”The desk clerk says, “Sir, that’s absurd. Have you looked for the door?”The person says, ” Well, there’s one door that leads to the bathroom. There’s a second door that goes into the closet. And there’s a door I haven’t tried, but it has a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.”

Doors and Humanity

Posted on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 in Details, General

One of the reasons I enjoy beautiful doors is that it gives me a sense of humanity: somebody really made an extra effort here where it was not at all required.  I strongly admire anyone whose life  represents an attitude of

”We dont have to do it, but we do it anyway!”

See, a door can be so plain, only built for usage. But when people (more…)

Why The Doors are called The Doors

Posted on Thursday, June 11, 2009 in General
Hello darlings!
I am sure you are well aware of the frustration occuring when you search for something online only to come up with stuff you dont need. Like trying to find out about INDIANS only to get something on Native Americans. No offense, please! And as you can well imagine: searching for DOORS mostly leads to the bloody rock group! No offense, Jimmy and all! So I decided to find out why “The Doors” called themselves the doors.

I will try to be quick, knowing of (more…)
