Gate Guards

Posted on Saturday, November 7, 2009 in India

To understand the gate culture in India you have to keep in mind the climate. With the intense heat, no one can bear closed doors. There is always an open metal gate in front of the actual door, sort of like the American screen door to keep the flies out. But that is not secure enough in this country if you want some draft to enter your house. But more than anything else, these open doors allow the sand, and dust and dirt to come into your house. In India, you cant be a clean-freak, or you go mad!

  1. Annie Mathai says:

Those aren’t chilli peppers, but dry mango leaves, mango leaves being considered auspicious.

  2. Door Darling says:

You are right, but I was acutally thinking about the small lemon thing near the door lock. Many, many things are auspicious in India, all to fight the “evil eye”….

  3. Indian says:

I guess they arent even mango leaves, but the leaves of the Ashoka tree.
