Doors and Humanity

Posted on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 in Details, General

One of the reasons I enjoy beautiful doors is that it gives me a sense of humanity: somebody really made an extra effort here where it was not at all required.  I strongly admire anyone whose life  represents an attitude of

”We dont have to do it, but we do it anyway!”

See, a door can be so plain, only built for usage. But when people take the time, energy, creativity (and money, yes) to make something beautiful out of something plain and practical, this really makes our environment humane, no? And this determination, to do it just because, is winning over a  utalitarian outlook on life.  Anyone who puts a lovely stucko detail on the corner of a building, creates a bronze art deco door lock, carves a poem on the wall, puts a flower box on a shabby window sill, anyone who sweeps the trash in front of their old house, who sets a beautiful table when friends come to dinner, who paints his car pink, or who bothers to wrap a gift with beautiful ribbons, and hangs art everywhere, these people are making life more enjoyable for all of us.

What if  all the houses looked the same and all the doors were just black slabs of plastic, and what if no one planted flowers anymore, or we all started wearing blue overalls, and no one cared for public parks ?????
Darlings, what a world would we live in without beautiful things? It should not only be our human right to express ourselves, but our duty to make even the most mundane things beautiful.
So go and decorate a door today. Hang a wreath, paint the door purple, put a flower box on your door step.

When you brighten your day, you brighten the day for us all.

Let the tiger come out!

Let creativity into your life and show it at the door!
